NEW YORK CITY — Filipino fashion took center stage at this year’s New York Fashion Week, with two remarkable designers, Kenneth Barlis and Bessie Besana, showcasing their stunning collections and making headlines for their contributions to the fashion capital of America.
Kenneth Barlis, a prominent Filipino American designer based in Hollywood, presented his breathtaking Fall/Winter 2025 collection Feb. 6 at the annual Arts Hearts Fashion, held at the historic Angel Orensanz Center.
As the only Filipino designer featured in this year’s lineup, Barlis’s return to the Big Apple was a moment of pride and excitement.

Originally from Zamboanga and now based in Hollywood, Barlis has made a name for himself by dressing A-list celebrities and gaining recognition as a finalist on Season 19 of Project Runway.
His latest collection featured 20 breathtaking looks that encapsulated his signature bold and luxurious style, blending elements of nature with urban chic.
Attendees were treated to exquisite womenswear adorned with ruffles and feathers, while the menswear offered couture suits rich in intricate embroidery and silk. The collection shimmered with touches of tulle, organza and Swarovski crystals, elevating each piece to a new level of elegance.
“It feels exhilarating to return to New York Fashion Week after a year away,” the Fil-Am designer told Inquirer.net USA. “The vibrant energy and electrifying atmosphere of the city reignited my passion for fashion. There’s truly no place like it.”

When asked about the inspiration behind this season’s collection, Barlis said, “My recent trip to Hawaii was incredibly inspiring. The vibrant colors of the Birds of Paradise flowers captivated me – especially their striking hues of orange, yellow and red. It reminded me of the beauty and power of nature, which I wanted to channel into my designs.”
The collection serves as an homage to both the dynamic energy of New York City and the tranquil beauty of Hawaii’s landscapes. “Each piece reflects a balance between bold city chic and the natural elegance of tropical flora,” Barlis said. “It’s a celebration of color, culture and creativity, designed for the modern individual who embodies both vibrancy and grace.”
Since establishing his brand in 2012, Barlis has become synonymous with elegance and luxury. At just 32 years old, he has dressed stars like Carrie Underwood and Offset, and in 2018, he launched the KB School of Fashion to mentor aspiring models.
Barlis’s story is one of resilience – navigating challenges as a young, gay Asian designer raised by a single mother in a Muslim community. His commitment to community service is evident in his recent efforts during the pandemic, where he created KB masks for local hospitals to support those in need.
Meanwhile, just two days later, NY-based designer Bessie Besana made history by unveiling his stunning bridal collection at the FILIPINXT runway show at 4W43 in Manhattan.
