Instagram’s latest update introduces a real-time location-sharing feature designed to help users find each other at events, concerts and social gatherings.

At first glance, it may seem like a fun and convenient way to stay connected, but concerns are mounting – especially among Filipino users – over potential privacy risks.

The new feature, named “Map,” appears at the top of the app where users typically share “Notes.” By clicking on the “Map” icon, users can view a map displaying the locations of followers who have opted to share their whereabouts.

The feature also allows zooming in for a more precise view and even enables direct messaging with those visible on the map. But is it really a friend finder or a privacy nightmare?

While Instagram emphasizes that the feature is optional, some users argue that location-sharing, even when done voluntarily, could lead to unintended risks.

A viral Facebook post by Filipino user Reymarc Jason Tampos highlights these concerns: “Instagram’s new location-sharing feature may seem harmless, but it raises important concerns about privacy and safety. While the feature is optional, sharing your location—even by choice—can expose you to risks such as stalking or unwanted tracking by others.”

A lot of users in the comments section supported the claim, further noting that sharing one’s whereabouts, even with trusted followers, could have unforeseen consequences if the information lands in the wrong hands.

This apprehension resonates with many social media users who fear that real-time location updates could be exploited by malicious individuals.

In a country where digital safety remains a growing concern, Filipinos are calling for greater transparency and stronger security measures from Instagram to prevent potential misuse of the feature.

“As we enjoy the benefits of social media, we must also remain cautious about features that could compromise our security. Think twice before enabling location sharing—your privacy and safety come first,” the post added.
