Interestingly, the first screening on Jan. 4 sold out quickly which highlighted the growing excitement surrounding the film’s international debut.
Scheduled to run from Jan. 2 to 13, the festival has earned a reputation for spotlighting exceptional independent films, with some going on to be contenders at the Academy Awards. “Sunshine” is part of the World Cinema Now section.
In “Sunshine,” the “Can’t Buy Me Love” star plays a young gymnast facing the tough realities of both teenage pregnancy and the intense pressure of competing for a spot on the national team. As her character grapples with these challenges, a mysterious figure enters her life, unraveling unexpected revelations that alter her perception of family and resilience.
The announcement of Sunshine’s participation in the festival was made by Project 8 Projects, the film’s producer, who shared the news with enthusiasm on Instagram, saying, “Sunshine goes to the US!”
This is not the first time the film has been selected for a film festival internationally. In September 2024, the film was also featured in the 49th Toronto International Film Festival’s Centrepiece section, which showcased 43 films from a wide array of countries.
