A smarter water system for Los Angeles County
Every year LA County wastes billions of gallons of water because our 100-year-old water management system wasn’t built to capture most of the rain that falls in our region. The result is that the rain washes over streets and other paved areas, picks up trash and pollutants, and flows out to our rivers, streams and into the ocean.
Measure W is a local parcel tax that would help modernize this system. Using technology, science and nature-based solutions, Measure W would provide local funding for projects that could:
- capture and store enough storm water for two million families, one third of the county’s residents
- clean the plastic, trash and toxins from LA’s waterways, beaches and ocean
- increase natural spaces that can improve public health, especially in underserved communities.
If approved by 66.7% of local voters, Measure W would generate an estimated $300 million per year by authorizing a parcel tax of 2.5 cents per square foot of a property’s impermeable surface, or $83 a year for a typical single-residence home. Low income seniors and schools would be exempted.
