CITY OF CARSON, California — October as Filipino American History Month (FAHM) has been celebrated in this city by the Filipino American Chamber of Commerce of South Bay Los Angeles Area (FACC-SLAA) since 2011, very shortly after the organization was initially chartered earlier that same year.

This year, FACC-SLAA will once again be celebrating Filipino American History Month, with “FilAms Got Talent (a Dance Group Competition)” at the South Bay Pavilion Mall (20700 S Avalon Blvd, Carson) from 1:00 until 4:00 p.m. Saturday, October 13, 2018.

The event will feature exhibits from various member businesses throughout the South Bay. “FilAms Got Talent” is open to local dance groups with at least two members of Filipino descent. The top winners and a number of special awardees, will receive a total of $2,500 in cash prizes.

October as Filipino American History Month commemorates the first recorded landfall of Filipinos in the continental United States, which occurred on October 18, 1587, when “Luzones Indios” came ashore from the Spanish galleon Nuestra Senora de Esperanza and landed in what is now Morro Bay, in Central California. In 2009, U.S. Congress recognized October as Filipino American History Month in the United States.
