WWII in PH Conference, Sept. 22 at USF
SAN FRANCISCO –The 4th Conference on World War II in the Philippines– Resistance, Retaliation, Reconciliation & Rescission will take place onSaturday, September 22 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at McLaren Conference Center, University of San Francisco.
Hosted by the Bataan Legacy Historical Society, Memorare Manila 1945, the Yuchengco Philippine Studies Program of the University of San Francisco, and Kasamahan at USF, this year’s panels include:
- The Implementation of the WWII in the Philippines lesson plans for Grade 11 in California
- Military & Civilian Resistance
- War Crimes & Reconciliation
The conference is chaired by Golden Gate University Law Professor (Former Dean of Law School) Rachel Van Cleave. Experts and survivors from the Philippines and the United States will be in attendance. It will be opened by Father Paul Fitzgerald, S.J., President of the University of San Francisco.
Among the speakers will be James Scott, Author of Rampage: MacArthur, Yamashita & the Battle of Manila who will speak in the War Crimes Panel.
High school teachers will speak about their implementation of the Lesson Plans that were created last year during two teachers’ workshops conducted by the Bataan Legacy Historical Society to help implement the Grade 11 U.S. history curriculum framework that contains WWII in the Philippines. These lesson plans are now available to schools for free, including primary documents and resources.
Included in the teachers’ panel is Shelby Thompson of Fontainebleau High School in Mandeville, Louisiana. Also featured is a junior high school student from Ronald Reagan High School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, who created a project on the Rescission Act, a 1946 U.S. legislation, which denied Filipino veterans of WWII their veterans’ benefits as part of the U.S. Army Forces in the Far East.
Admission is Free for Students with a valid ID; adults $20 (includes box lunch). There is also a sliding scale admission for the elderly. Registration is strongly recommended through Bataan Legacy. Bataan Legacy Historical Society is a 501(c)(3) organization. It worked successfully with the California Department of Education to include WWII in the Philippines in the U.S. history curriculum framework for Grade 11 in California.
