Nonoy Zuñiga, 4th Impact to headline PH Independence Day event in NY
NEW YORK – The Filipino American community in the New York area is set to celebrate the 126th Philippine Independence anniversary with the annual parade on Madison Avenue in New York City this Sunday, June 2.
This year’s parade promises to be bigger and better than ever before, featuring cultural shows, dances and festivities that showcase the rich heritage of the Philippines, organizers said.
The event includes a concert featuring top balladeer Nonoy Zuñiga, P-pop girl group 4th Impact and the Kuyamis Festival.
Performers also include Mig Ayesa, Cedric Escobar, Angel Ram, Kirby Asunto, KRSH, After 3, Chin Gomez, Christine Vega, Camille De La Cruz and Brown Sugar.
This year’s theme is “Preserving Our Filipino Culture and Heritage to Unite Generations,” Arman David, president of the Philippine Independence Day Council Inc. (PIDCI), has announced.
“This theme is a tribute to the diversity of cultures and traditions that make up our great nation, and the importance of coming together in harmony and respect for one another,” David said.
It will be a day filled with vibrant cultural experiences that will bridge the gap between generations, he added.
Parade Grand Marshal Charina Amunategui said she is thrilled to be part of the “world’s largest Philippine Independence Day parade outside Manila.”
The celebration will kick off at 8 a.m. with a flag-raising ceremony and an Independence Day Mass at the Philippine Center.
Following the morning ceremonies, participants will head over to Madison Avenue between Park and Lexington Avenues for a cultural extravaganza from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
“Immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, and tastes of the Philippines,” organizers said on the event website. “Filipino food vendors will be serving up all your favorite dishes, from savory Filipino street food, such as barbecue, sisig and delectable Filipino desserts.”
Local artisans will showcase their talent with handcrafted souvenirs and beautiful works of art.
The highlight of the day – the much-anticipated Independence Day Parade – begins at noon with a dazzling display of Filipino pride.
Marching bands will fill the air with lively music and colorful floats will showcase the beauty of the Philippines. Cultural groups will enthrall the audience with traditional dances.
The festival will come alive with a vibrant live concert at Madison Avenue and 25th Street, taking place from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
