Birthday charm fails as Alex Eala misses French Open main draw
Filipino tennis sensation Alex Eala’s hopes of making it into the main draw of the 2024 French Open were dashed on her birthday.
Despite a valiant effort on becoming the first Filipina to reach a Grand Slam main draw, the Rafa Nadal Academy student fell to world No. 93 Argentina’s Julia Riera in a close 6-4, 6-7, 4-6 defeat at Roland Garros.
The three-set match, lasting two hours and 37 minutes, saw the 19-year-old tennis prodigy fiercely battling her opponent. Eala secured the first set 6-4, showcasing her skills and determination. However, Riera edged out Eala in critical moments, ultimately claiming victory.
The deciding third set was a rollercoaster of emotions. The Argentinian foe initially took a 4-2 lead, but Eala, currently ranked world No. 160, fought back to level the score at 4-4. Unfortunately, Eala’s struggle to hold serve allowed Riera to win the next two games and successfully clinch the match.
Statistically, Eala outperformed Riera in several aspects. Eala scored more points overall with 108 to 104 and had a better first serve percentage 73 percent compared to Riera’s 59 percent. Eala also had higher receiving points with 52, while Riera garnered 44. On the other hand, Riera’s three service aces and clutch performance in crucial moments made the difference.
In an Instagram post, the Rafa Nadal Academy wished Eala a happy birthday, stating, “We know it wasn’t the birthday you would have wished for. And that a dream result has escaped you because of small details. But today is a day to keep dreaming BIG. You’ll be playing the Main Draw of [the] Grand Slam soon! Happy birthday [Alex],” with a cake emoji.
