Think of a classic Filipino film directed by the acclaimed Lino Brocka. Many titles might come to mind, but “Bona,” starring the legendary actress Nora Aunor, is often the first choice.

In 2024, this iconic Filipino film is set to grace screens once more as it returns to the international stage. A newly restored 4K version of the 1980 classic will be released in France and the United States later this year.

According to an exclusive report by Variety, the restored version of “Bona” will be featured in the Cannes Classics section. The screening marks the film’s return to Cannes, where it is expected to capture renewed attention and appreciation from global audiences.

The report added that following its Cannes showcase, “Bona” will also be released in France on Sept. 25 through Carlotta Films, which is also managing global sales. Subsequently, Kani Releasing will handle the film’s release in the US and Canada in the fourth quarter of this year.

Variety also reported that the 4K restoration process was conducted at the Cité de Mémoire laboratory in Paris, utilizing the original 35 mm image and sound negatives preserved by LTC Patrimoine. The restoration of the film’s sound was carried out by L.E. Diapason, ensuring that the film’s audio-visual quality meets contemporary standards.

Not just that, a new poster for “Bona” has been created by the design company Midnight Marauder, known for their work on films like Netflix’s “I’m Thinking of Ending Things.”

For the uninitiated, the film not only features Aunor but also stars Phillip Salvador. It has received accolades such as being named one of “The Best 100 Films in the World” by the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles in 1997.

Brocka’s films have a storied history at Cannes. In 1976, his critically acclaimed movie “Insiang” premiered at the Director’s Fortnight. The 77th annual Cannes Film Festival, which opened on May 14, will have its closing ceremony on May 25.
