Which US states show moms the most love?
Mothers are the epitome of the purest love. They deserve the highest tribute for going above and beyond for their families, offering wisdom, strength and unconditional love.

Each mom has a distinct story of sacrifice and love – from step-parenting to adoption – and everyone holds a unique level of closeness or bonding with their mother.

In celebration of  Mother’s Day, a study unveils the top states where most residents portray the closest bond with their mothers.

A survey conducted last February 2024 by the photo company Mixbook revealed results from interviews with 2,021 Americans across 40 states to gauge their closeness with their mothers.

The participants were asked, “How often do you typically communicate with your mom” and “How would you describe your relationship with your mom.”

Key Findings from the survey

  • Top three states with the closest relationship with their mothers: Maryland, New Jersey, Tennessee
  • Keeping close connections to their moms, half of the respondents live in the same city as their moms
  • Californians showcase strong bonds with their mothers ranking at No. 7
  • Notably, 61 percent of the participants are closer to their moms than their dads
  • 15 percent find their moms’ limited tech knowledge is a barrier to a closer relationship
  • A large percentage – 61 percent – rarely use FaceTime to contact their moms
  • Emotional and physical connections across the states

“Close to mom” may resonate differently for everybody. For some it might mean frequent talking, emotional support or just basking in their mother’s love over a weekend dinner.

Respondents in New Jersey, Maryland and Tennessee — states setting the bar high — connect with their moms through frequent chats and visitations.

Furthermore, the survey results prove that nurturing a bond with their mothers is an ongoing effort. Americans keep the bond alive through sharing emotions, life updates, celebratory events and weekly visits — with nearly half of the respondents visiting their moms at least once a week.

Meanwhile, doing hobbies together or seeking advice are uncommon, highlighting the varied factors in familial relationships.

Additionally, respondents from South Carolina, Florida and New York turned out to live the closest in proximity to their moms, enjoying the perks of easy access to physical and emotional support — home-cooked meals included.

As Mother’s Day rolls around, let’s take this time to appreciate them. A simple phone call, a unique gift or thoughtful gestures surely will keep those bonds tight and unbreakable.
