Filipino American pop sensation Olivia Rodrigo is currently rocking her “Guts” world tour (with hints for a Philippine stop), and she is adding a familiar band to the lineup that many of her fans will recognize.

The 21-year-old chart-topper is teaming up with the iconic 90s alt-rock group, The Breeders, for a series of highly anticipated performances.

The highlight of this collaboration will be four consecutive sold-out shows at New York City’s Madison Square Garden on April 4, 5, 8 and 9.

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Deal shared her mix of disbelief and excitement about the collaboration, joking, “We’re just from Dayton, Ohio!” as she reminisced about the band’s humble beginnings. “It’s a big deal,” she added.

Reflecting on her initial reaction when approached by Rodrigo’s team, Deal recalled, “I was just like, ‘What?’ It was odd!”

However, as discussions progressed, Deal found comfort in Rodrigo’s genuine love for music. “She’s just really into music. She knows Annie Clark [of St. Vincent], listens to all sorts of different music from Billy Joel to Sheryl Crow, and it’s like, ‘Oh, she’s just really into music.’ Knowing that, it made more sense. She just really liked us!”

Meanwhile, the young Grammy-winning artist, of Filipino-American heritage, has previously mused about how her life feels divided into two distinct chapters: before and after encountering “Cannonball” by her favorite band, The Breeders.

The “Drivers License” hitmaker also attended the band’s show in Los Angeles, and they had a photo together posted on the band’s Instagram, with the caption “Look who came to see us at our LA show.”

In other news, Olivia Rodrigo already dropped the deluxe version of her 2023 album with five additional tracks, among them a new song titled “So American.”
