Ready to step into a field with the lingering smell of ube everywhere? San Francisco District Six is ready to paint the town purple with their Ube Festival.
The rising popularity of ube has been evident in the Bay Area these past years and this Sunday, April 7, the biggest purple yam fest comes to life.
Beloved in the Filipino American community, the bright purple tuberous root hailing from the Philippines has reached new heights with this tradition that’s been casting a lavender spell since 2014. From its vibrant purple hue to its sweet and savory taste, ube steps into the limelight at this year’s Ube Festival.
Expressing his enthusiasm, festival participant and Uncle Tito co-owner Joseph Alcasabas says, “I’m excited that everyone is catching on because it deserves the spotlight.”

Uncle Tito, a beloved Filipino American eatery in SoMa, will serve up two variants of ube at the event, drawing curiosity. “It’s just eye-catching out of the gate, right? The bold purple has you wondering what it tastes like,” he says.
Ube-infused delights await
With over 20 local vendors gearing up to showcase their specialties, prepare to taste this local ingredient in unimaginable ways.
Imagine ube dessert bars to ube salsa on tacos, and yes, even ube lemonade, the varieties are endless. One of the highlights? This festival’s ONE-TIME only and first ever ube musubi — a sweet and savory concoction of your favorite Japanese dish infused with ube rice and candied spam topped with ube drizzle.

Beyond the delish eats
