Mother Nature is in full swing with the California desert transforming into a spectacular, colorful canvas of wildflowers – the seasonal super bloom. What to expect? Get ready to revel in the beauty of an endless scenery of coreopsis, lupine, desert sunflowers and more.

California is blessed with these wildflower explosions across its state parks,  and authorities are reminding visitors to “enjoy but not destroy.”

State Parks Director Armando Quintero says, “We welcome all Californians and visitors from around the world to experience this natural phenomenon and ask all to keep the ‘Beauty in the Bloom’ by staying on designated trails and taking only photos, not flowers.”

What is a super bloom?

A super bloom is a rare desert botanical phenomenon in California and Arizona. An unusually high proportion of wildflowers blooms after a wet year that follows several dry years.

It transforms California fields and deserts into a landscape of colors, attracting big crowds of visitors. Imagine a music festival sans the long lines and overpriced food.

What causes a super bloom?

This phenomenon is the result of perfect conditions — excellent temperature, ample rain and that perfect California sunshine. Thanks to the ideal blend of winter rains, sunlight and the gentle coaxing of spring, seeds start to bloom.

This year, California reaped a generous amount of rainfall and is expected to set the stage for an encore of vibrant flower displays.

Blooms will welcome you in the heart of Borrego Springs along Henderson Canyon Road, southwards in Highway S2 and the sandy areas of Coyote Canyon.

Early bloomers like phacelia, primrose and wooly sunflower are stealing the scene, especially near June Wash, Fish Creek and Arroyo Tapiado.

Tip: For unpaved park roads, four-wheel drives are your best friend.

Other notable Desert State Parks

  • Red Rock Canyon State Park
  • Chino Hills State Park
  • Onyx Ranch State Vehicular Recreation Area
  • Hungry Valley State Vehicular Recreation Area
  • Fort Teton State Historic Park

While everyone is welcome to revel in the beauty of super bloom 2024, visitors are asked to ensure these nature’s gifts remain pristine for future generations to enjoy.

Here are some tips to enjoy the trails and explore the vast scenery responsibly and with care:

  • Check weather updates and dress appropriately — the desert might surprise you with unexpected weather changes.
  • Mobile network coverage can be a tad of a hermit in these state parks; it is advisable to download guides and maps beforehand.
  • Do your homework and search ahead of your trip. An Instagrammable spot might just be hiding near your destined spot.
  • Stay hydrated and pack up with water, snacks and your best hats.
  • Respect the place, follow park guidelines and stay on trails. Remember: Photos can be taken but not the blooms.
