Manitoba’s first all-Filipino musical sets new milestone
In honor of its 70th anniversary season, musical theater company Rainbow Stage is set to illuminate Manitoba’s cultural landscape with the world premiere of “Ma-Buhay” in June.
This groundbreaking production, the first-ever all-Filipino musical in Manitoba, showcases the musical talents of Winnipeg’s own Joseph Sevillo, a member of the Canadian Actors Equity Association, with Joshua Caldo co-writing some of the show’s songs.
“Ma-Buhay” not only marks the debut of a fully Filipino musical in Manitoba but also stands as Rainbow Stage’s maiden commission and development of a musical production.
Set against the backdrop of present-day Winnipeg, “Ma-Buhay” chronicles the journeys of three singing and dancing finalists as they strive to redefine their destinies for the better in a fictional Filipino reality TV competition.

Stepping into the spotlight is Andrea Macasaet, a performer celebrated for originating the role of Anne Boleyn in “Six” (Broadway, Chicago Shakespeare Theatre) and captivating audiences as Mimi in “Rent” (Stratford).
In “Ma-Buhay,” Macasaet will portray the character of Celina Davina Molina.
The excitement surrounding “Ma-Buhay” reached new heights with the recent Instagram announcement unveiling the ensemble and creative team.
