On Feb. 2, radio station Hyde FM hosted the 2024 Frequency Film Festival in San Francisco. The state-wide showcase featured seven short films that pushed the envelope of sounds, visual aesthetics, and musical scores.

Aspiring producers and filmmakers took the festival as an opportunity to find their footing in the industry. Having worked with a diverse roster of promising artists and writers, the event doubled as an avenue for the featured creatives to grow, hone their skills, and sharpen their artistic outlooks through their own passion projects.

One of the short films on Hyde FM’s lineup was the sentimental piece “Rehash.” Directed by David Dutton, the abstract film revolves around a dejected couple who reminisce on their final night together through the anger and love that once fueled their connection. The film portrays the seemingly endless cycles in toxic relationships that eventually lead to their breaking points.

For Filipino and Irish-American singer-songwriter Ouida, starring in “Rehash” was nothing short of a fulfilling experience. Besides seizing the opportunity to grow as a well-rounded artist, Ouida deemed it an honor to work alongside Dutton—a “creative powerhouse” who explored every artistic approach possible to the short film. He even sourced scenes from a retired music video that Ouida also lent her acting skills to.

“I’m so excited to see the new life he’s breathed into this narrative,” Ouida wrote about Dutton on Instagram.

The “Rehash” director didn’t hold back to accomplish the short film’s vision either. After reimagining music video clips into scenes to drive the project’s narrative, Dutton took another daring route and nearly froze while capturing underwater shots of his talents. Though intimate and close-knit, he and Ouida deserve the growing audience they’ve gained through the Frequency Film Festival.

Before “Rehash,” Ouida released soulful portrayals of love and heartbreak on her debut EP “Come Rain, Come Shine.” After her acting debut at Hyde FM’s showcase, things are only looking up for her and the next batch of creatives she’s yet to collaborate with.

“Rehash” premiered at the Frequency Film Festival alongside six other San Francisco-based short films “Everybody Wins,” “Lemon Lime,” “Sirens,” “19Seventy Free,” “Novo Dia,” and “I am whole.”
