Filipina figure skater earns silver at Iceland tournament
This year is off to a great start for young Filipino athletes. Even at early ages, they have consistently made the country proud with the achievements they have earned in their respective playing fields.
The ice skating world has recently witnessed Filipinos excel in various competitive categories. The first of which is Filipino-American short track speed skater Peter Groseclose, who finished fifth at the 2024 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Gangwon, South Korea. He received well-deserved praise from South Korean athletes and coaches despite getting injured after competing in three events.
On Jan. 25, the spotlight shone on Filipina figure skater Cathryn Limketkai. The 18-year-old earned a silver medal at the 2024 Reykjavik International Games (RIG) in Iceland. Limketkai finished second out of six competitors in the junior women’s category.

Limketkai’s coach, former competitive figure skater Oula Jaaskelainen, was by her side throughout the tournament. Under his guidance, she garnered 124.16 points, with 51.14 points in the Short Program portion and 73.02 points in the Free Skating section.
Jenni Hirvonen from Finland earned gold at the competition with 126.65 points, while Argentina’s Cecilia Donahue bagged bronze with 105.90 points. Limketkai also competed with teen figure skaters from Great Britain, Denmark, and Iceland.
Prior to the RIG, Limketkai led the Philippine National Figure Skating Championships in Pasay City last November. She shared the rink with figure skaters from Indonesia, Singapore, and the United Arab Emirates. Filipino-American gold medalist Sofia Frank joined the skating meet, too.
