What is traditional Filipino tambourine jewelry?
A big part of Filipino culture that isn’t often talked about is jewelry. First generation Filipino immigrants often see jewelry as an investment or treasured heirlooms that can be passed down to the next generation. There’s usually at least one item of jewelry that gets passed down from parents to their children.
For the descendants of these immigrants, these pieces of jewelry hold the hope and memories their parents have bequeathed to them. But simultaneously, they might also be hoping for something more Filipino in terms of design.
Tambourine jewelry is a style that’s uniquely Filipino. These intricately crafted pieces were all the rage during the Spanish colonial period and a signifier of wealth and status. While the style had fallen out of fashion after Spain’s exit from the country, there’s currently been a renaissance in these pieces.
What makes tambourine or “tamborin” jewelry so special is that they’re traditionally handmade. Each coil, bead, and link are handwrought together by artisans who have taken years to perfect the craft.
If you’re interested in purchasing one of these pieces and visiting the Philippines anytime soon (or have a relative leaving for the motherland), here are some brands and designers you should keep in mind.
