Smoothies with chickpeas? Vanessa Hudgens says her “Beige Not Boring” smoothie is “a whole vibe” | Screencap from @vanessahudgens/Instagram

Filipino-American Hollywood star Vanessa Hudgens has spilled the beans on her unconventional breakfast smoothie, and the secret ingredient might leave you doing a double take.

While chickpeas have long been hailed as one of the heroes of Filipino halo-halo and Middle Eastern falafels, Hudgens is taking it to a whole new level by blending them into her morning concoction.

In an Instagram post with a caption, “This smoothie is a whole vibe,” the newlywed actress has partnered with plant-based milk brand Silk to share her not-so-common breakfast smoothie recipe.

Alongside staples like frozen banana and almond milk, the addition of chickpeas brings a twist inspired by her Filipino heritage.

“The smoothie that I actually created for this challenge is not your typical smoothie. It’s got some interesting ingredients in it, but it’s actually really delicious,” Hudgens said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter

Acknowledging the pitfalls of starting the day with heavy and sugary meals, she shared her motivation to embrace a lighter and plant-centric approach to breakfast.

“It’s called Beige Not Boring—it has peanut butter and chocolate, but also chickpeas,” she continued. “I wanted to incorporate something that is from my [Filipino] heritage, so I pulled from the chickpeas and it’s really delicious and nutrient-rich.”

When asked if chickpeas are a Filipino ingredient, she answered yes, “at least in my household there was. There’s a few great Filipino dishes that have chickpeas.”

So, with health-conscious consumers seeking innovative ways to introduce more plant-based options into their diets, Hudgens’ chickpea-infused smoothie might just be the trendsetter’s choice for a revitalizing start to the day in 2024.
