Special Unicef Christmas cards highlight Filipino artist Malang Santos’ works

As the year winds down to its last few days, it’s not too late to make a difference this holiday season. One thing to do? By supporting the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund’s (Unicef) life-changing mission through limited-edition Christmas cards.
And if Christmas has already passed, there’s no need to worry because the donation opportunity is still ongoing.
This year, the renowned Filipino artist Mauro “Malang” Santos took center stage in their campaign, bringing his masterful strokes and vibrant colors to a collection of special cards.
For every 1,000 peso-donation to Unicef, you will receive a set of 10 Christmas cards, each adorned with the timeless artistry of Santos. This contribution will help Unicef continue its life-saving and life-building initiatives, ensuring a brighter future for vulnerable children.
Santos’ legacy lives on as the cards feature two iconic artworks—”Family in Barrio” (1967) and “Vendors” (1998)—selected from his family’s private collection.
This isn’t the first time Unicef has undertaken such a campaign. Last year, they showcased the work of National Artist Larry Alcala.
Who is Malang Santos?
A true maestro in the world of Filipino art, Malang left an indelible mark through his career as a cartoonist, illustrator, and painter.
Recognized as the Artist of the Year by the Society of Philippine Illustrators and Cartoonists in 1964, Malang’s creative journey began at age 19 with the Manila Chronicle, where his comic strip “Kosme, the Cop-Retired” gained immense popularity.

“Family in Barrio” and “Vendors,” included in the cards, serve as reflections of Malang’s favorite themes, intertwining the warmth of mother and child, the resilience of women vendors, the majesty of trees, and the spirit of competition embodied by a man and his gamecock.
Through these works, Unicef aims to not only spread holiday cheer but also inspire hope for a more colorful future for children in need.
