While some believe that if you want to make a friend, go eat with them, it is true with how Filipino restaurant Kaya in Orlando is bridging community connections through their delish meals.

Bursting onto Sunshine State’s culinary scene a year ago, bringing forth their bistek Bavette, adobong kabute risotto and ice cream pandesal sandwiches, Kaya has clinched a spot in the Michelin Guide list.

All thanks to the culinary wits of general manager Jamilyn Salonga Bailey and general chef Lordlier “Lo” Lalicon who turned the tables of Kaya to success, filling in what’s missing in Mills 50 district — a Filipino restaurant.

Growing up and sometimes feeling alone, the Filipino American owner of bar Redlight Redlight Erica Abalos-Hernandez shares how she feels wonderful in Kaya. “I can come here with friends and enjoy the deliciousness. The first time I dined here, I cried with joy.”

The food spot being a hub for sharing of ideas, good food and music, she feels the sense of community. “They’ve created so many ways to experience this space they’ve created,” said Erica who often attends the Filipino restaurant’s karaoke night with her girlfriends.

“It feels wonderful I can come here with my friends, who are also Filipino American, and also friends from all over and enjoy the deliciousness,” shared Erica.
