Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘Can’t Catch Me Now’ makes Oscar’s shortlist for best original song
It’s a fact: Filipino-American singer-songwriter Olivia Rodrigo is ending the year with a bang by being included in the prestigious Oscar shortlist.
In an announcement made on Dec. 21, the Academy unveiled its shortlists for the 96th Academy Awards in 10 categories, setting the stage for the highly-anticipated event scheduled for Mar. 10, 2024.
Among the noteworthy mentions for Best Original Song was “Vampire” songstress’ powerful contribution to the soundtrack of “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” with “Can’t Catch Me Now.”
The pop sensation and Grammy winner took to Instagram to express her gratitude and excitement about the recognition.
“So excited and thankful that ‘Can’t Catch Me Now’ was included in the Oscar’s shortlist for best original song!! and @_the_scl nominated it for outstanding original song for a dramatic or documentary visual media production!!!! So grateful and so honored to get to write music for such an amazing story,” she wrote.

The Best Original Song shortlist, comprising 15 remarkable entries, highlights the industry’s diverse musical talents.
Notably, alongside Olivia Rodrigo’s song, “Barbie” submitted three tracks for consideration in the same category, and all were also shortlisted. These are Dua Lipa’s “Dance The Night,” Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?,” and Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt’s “I’m Just Ken,” performed by Ryan Gosling.

The Academy members will vote for shortlisted entries from Jan. 11 to 16 next year, with final nominations for the 96th Academy Awards revealed on Jan. 23.
Meanwhile, the grand ceremony, to be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel for the second consecutive year, is set to unfold at The Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood.
