PH team gears up for World Ultimate Frisbee Championships

The shores of Huntington Beach, California are hosting an international competition as the World Flying Disc Federation brings the 2023 World Beach Ultimate Championships.

Over 700 players representing 50 teams from 15 different countries convened, all vying for the title of the world’s finest beach Ultimate teams.

Among the many international teams striving for glory, a spirited group of Filipino athletes arrived a few days ahead of the competition to prepare for their quest for gold happening on Nov. 1 to 5.

Team Philippines, consisting of 60 dedicated athletes, has brought four teams to the United States, with their sights firmly set on securing the coveted gold medal. They are playing in the open, the grandmasters’, the women’s, and the mixed masters’ division.

On their first day of the World Ultimate Frisbee Championships, the team was on a roll as the women’s team secured a victory in their initial match against Great Britain. The grand masters’ team earned a hard-fought win against Canada, while the masters’ team emerged victorious in their match against Colombia. Moreover, the open team had a strong start, claiming a win against Ireland.

Moving on to day two, their determination to secure the gold remained at its peak. The open team advanced to the next round after a win against Singapore.

Both the grand masters and open teams also emerged victorious in their respective games against Japan. Furthermore, the masters mixed team secured a convincing win against Poland.

But the women’s team had a tough match against USA, losing 2-13 and managed to bounce back and win 7-3 against Spain in a subsequent match.

The World Flying Disc Federation is the international sports federation responsible for world governance of flying disc (frisbee) sports, including Ultimate, Beach Ultimate, Disc Golf, Freestyle, Guts, and individual events.

The World Ultimate Frisbee Championships occurs once every four years, and the Philippines has consistently performed well, clinching the silver medals in both the 2008 and 2011 editions. This year’s competition is still ongoing with three more days left, and the hope for gold is still alive for team Philippines.
