US citizens can still fly to EU without travel authorization until 2025
Earlier this year, it was reported that if you hold a US and Canadian passport, you will need to fulfill a new entry prerequisite for traveling to Europe. But this may not happen anytime soon.
Called the Electronic Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS), this travel authorization was scheduled to be implemented in 2024 for visa-exempt individuals who are traveling to any of the 30 European countries where it is mandated.
However, the latest update from European authorities indicates that the implementation of ETIAS has been delayed. Travelers from the US and other visa-exempt countries to the Schengen Area member states will not need an ETIAS travel authorization until mid-2025, according to the European Commission.
EU officials have confirmed to SchengenVisaInfo.com that “due to unforeseen delays, it has become evident that this timeline is unattainable. As a result, the implementation of the ETIAS has been rescheduled to May 2025, with the possibility of further postponement.”
The delay in implementing ETIAS comes as a result of inoperability of the Entry/Exit System. According to EU authorities, it is an automated information technology system that will soon record the entry of non-EU travelers each time they pass through an external EU border.
They added that ETIAS cannot become functional without the implementation of the said security system.
For now, travelers from the US and Canada can still visit specific European countries without the need to obtain ETIAS authorization. However, it’s essential to stay updated on any changes or developments in travel requirements to ensure a smooth and hassle-free journey.
