A beauty and brains combo is what most of us wish for, and it’s exactly what Black Filipina-American Nevaeh Harmon possesses as she represents West Virginia in Miss USA.

Prior to joining the Miss USA pageant, she was a busy student juggling her studies. The 21-year-old Harmon even had her college dreams set but her story took a surprising twist in the form of a dazzling crown she earned in June 2023 after winning Miss West Virginia USA.

“It still feels very surreal,” Nevaeh said. “Sometimes I have to go back and watch the crowning video again just to make sure I didn’t actually dream that moment.”

Beauty, brains, and her dreams

While Harmon might be targeting the crown, she also has her eyes on an academic prize. This spring, she became the student body vice president, though she temporarily surrendered her gavel so she could focus on her new responsibilities as the Mountain State’s beauty queen.

A pre-med biochemistry major at Marshall University, she’s aiming for a spot at the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine after graduating and continue studying to become a pediatric physician.

“As a first-generation college student and a Black/Filipino-American female, I will always feel the importance of being that representation and role model for little girls who want to be doctors, engineers, nurses, scientists, astronauts, or in any STEM field,” Harmon said.
