Barbie is an iconic figure in the toy industry. She has been a runway model, an astronaut, a judge, and everything in between—a role model for many children across the globe. But even after venturing into various careers, her look remains classic for decades: pale skin, thin lips, and blonde hair.

While the first Black and Hispanic dolls were released in 1980, it was only until 2015 that Barbie manufacturer Mattel introduced a more diverse range of dolls. This inclusive collection has been expanding ever since, with more body types, skin tones, hairstyles, and medical conditions represented.

Now, what about adding a “dalagang Filipina” to the growing list?

Say hi to Binibining Barbie

Thanks to the recent success of the film “Barbie,” everybody is going wild over the idea of seeing the iconic doll in different cultural settings. It has sparked the imagination of many creatives, including artificial intelligence (AI) artists.

On July 19, NeoLabs AI dropped its reimagined version of Barbie’s world: a modern-day “binibini” with bronzed complexion and long black hair. She is wearing a traditional baro, a necklace, and a headpiece seemingly inspired by our culturally rich ethnic groups.

And of course, where there is Barbie, there’s always Ken. In this makeover, Ken leaves behind his typical look for a more distinctly Filipino appearance.

Gone are the Eurocentric features. Pinoy Ken has a more muscular build, thick lips and eyebrows, and moreno skin. He exudes a rugged charm that complements Barbie’s Filipina beauty.

Barbie’s dreamhouse? A modern bahay kubo

Even Barbie’s house in this AI reimagination is so Filipino-coded. Instead of the usual mansion, Barbie resides in a bi-level modernized bahay kubo. It’s a quaint, open-air residence that captures the essence of Filipino lifestyle and architecture.

Seamlessly blending heritage with contemporary living, the interiors also boast a fusion of classic Filipino elements and Barbie’s signature style. (I mean, is it really Barbie if it doesn’t have a touch of pink?)

But perhaps one of the most exciting features of this Filipino Barbie world is her mode of transportation—a pink jeepney with flamboyant designs.

Just saying, Mattel should contact Neolabs AI right now and consider a collaboration.
