Filipino bakery at 40 is a Maui, Hawaii institution
A beloved Filipino-owned bakery in Maui, Hawaii is marking its 40th year of serving oven goodies.
Stanley and Rufina Magbual, immigrants from the Philippines, opened Four Sisters Bakery in downtown Wailuku in 1983.
Stanley, who was a baker in the Philippines, started out by selling pandesal from a bus stop and door-to-door.
The couple raised 12 children by making breads and pastries from the small business, according to a feature article by Hawaii News Now’s Annalisa Burgos.
The four sisters the bakery is named after are Elizabeth, Mila, Melen and Bobby.
The Magbual’s son, Arnold, and his wife, Marjorie, took over the business some 20 years ago.
Arnold, a graduate of the Maui Culinary Academy, continued to make his father’s classic pandesal and ensaymada, and added local specialties like manapua, malasadas, cinnamon rolls. Spanish rolls and banana bread for a wider customer base.

Magbual told HNN’s Burgos that sales really boomed during the pandemic, and they’re now selling three times more than they did pre-COVID.
Four Sisters also hosts fundraisers throughout the year for the community, including its popular Thanksgiving drive.
