Elon Musk Faces Subpoena in Virgin Islands’ Epstein Lawsuit Against JPMorgan

/ 07:36 AM May 16, 2023

In a surprising turn of events in an already complicated saga, Elon Musk has been pulled into the US Virgin Islands government case against JP Morgan Chase.

A recent legal filing revealed that the court issued a subpoena to the Tesla CEO. It specifies that it had been challenging for the Virgin Islands to serve the subpoena to the billionaire.

The court issued the subpoena on April 28. This legal action is due to allegations that sex trafficker Epstein may have tried to refer Elon Musk as a customer to JPMorgan.

Furthermore, the US territory had requested Manhattan federal court Judge Jed Rakoff’s help to allow the serving of the subpoena to the billionaire via Tesla’s registered staff.

According to an NBC News report, if the court can serve the subpoena, it will ask Musk to submit any documents showing communication between him, Epstein, and JPMorgan.

In addition, it requires details related to Epstein’s engagement in human trafficking and his female procurement for sex. The Virgin Islands has alleged JPMorgan of helping and profiting from Epstein’s human trafficking to his private island.

Although JPMorgan has denied all the allegations, it still reflects a separate ongoing civil case at Manhattan Federal Court. A woman who accuses Epstein of sexual abuse has filed the latter case.

In a filing on May 4, the Virgin Islands revealed that the government had also released the same subpoena for documents to Google co-owner Larry Page. However, they are having difficulties in locating Page.

Previously, the US territory issued subpoenas to other prominent individuals. Some of them are former Disney executive Michael Ovitz and Hyatt Hotels executive chairman Thomas Pritzker.

Larry Page’s co-founder, Sergey Brin, and billionaire real estate investor Mort Zuckerman are also on the high-profile list of individuals with subpoenas.

In Monday’s court filing, the Virgin Islands have emphasized Musk’s billionaire worth status. They are implying Epstein may have attempted to refer him to JPMorgan.

Musk leads SpaceX and is at the reins of Tesla and Twitter. He did not reply to any comment request by CNBC. But he did react in his reply to Twitter user @unusual_whales.

Musk tweeted in his reply. “[This is] idiotic on so many levels. That cretin never advised me on anything whatsoever. The notion that I would need or listen to financial advice from a dumb crook is absurd. JPM let Tesla down ten years ago, despite having Tesla’s global commercial banking business, which we then withdrew. I have never forgiven them.”

In 2018, Epstein told The New York Times writer James Stewart that he was advising Musk. This is following the Securities and Exchange Commission’s investigation of Musk’s plans to make his company private. Tesla denied these allegations.

Epstein’s Downfall

Epstein, who once had connections to high-profile figures like Bill Clinton, Donald Trump, and Prince Andrew of Great Britain, was also a JPMorgan client from 1998-2013.

In 2008, he pleaded guilty in Florida to sex solicitation from a minor. Epstein had his tragic end in a Manhattan jail in Aug.2019. It was a month after his arrest for a child sext rafficking case. He died by suicide.

The involvement of prominent individuals in sex trafficking is a sensitive and complex issue. As more details come to light, the quest for justice for the victims remains uncertain.

With the issuance of subpoenas to major players like Page, Brin, and Elon Musk, the case takes on new heights. It raises more questions about the range of Epstein’s connections.
