Emotional Tribute to Taylor Swift’s Grandmother Sparks Heated Debate Online

/ 04:50 AM May 09, 2023

A heartwarming tribute in honor of Taylor Swift’s late grandma, Marjorie, at her recent concert in Nashville, Tennessee, has sparked a debate among the pop singer’s fans.

Last week, Swifties were excited about the new romance between Swift and The 1975 frontman, Matt Hailey. Now, Swift was once again in the spotlight.

On May 5, during her Eras Tour, Swift sang “Marjorie,” to which the fans surprised her with a tribute to her grandmother. The well-intended act raised comments and questions about the timing and if it placed the star in a difficult position.

While she performed, fans displayed photos of Marjorie, resulting in Swift’s emotional response. The 33-year-old singer addressed the tribute as “so beautiful.”

She shared that her grandmother was a performer before she died. Despite what seemed to be Swift’s positive reaction, online fans questioned whether the tribute was an appropriate gesture.

Swift asked the crowd at her concert, “What are you trying to do to me?” She added that her mother was likely “just like bawling” after the photos appeared.

While the singer appreciated the gesture saying it was “so meaningful and so special” to her, some fans thought it could be triggering. It might even have placed the singer in an awkward position in front of thousands of audience.

What are people saying about Taylor Swift’s tribute to her grandmother?

One Twitter user said that if Swift had shown any negative response, fans would criticize her. Other fans called the decision “so out of touch” and shared their sympathy for the pop singer.

Another Twitter user commented, “Given that this Marjorie is a now-deceased family member of Taylor Swift, this is one of the most abhorrent things I’ve ever seen a fan do.”

Some Swifties even expressed worry that the tribute might be a competition to make Taylor cry during her performances and concert attendees trying to compete with one another.

Moreover, other fans also expressed concerns that this might lead to the removal of the song “Marjorie” from the setlist.

One user also tweeted, “The ones who participated in #projectmarjorie were a different type of weird. You could’ve held up photos of your loved one who passed on as ‘your’ Marjorie. No photos of a stranger. Taylor Swift doesn’t know y’all. It’s like a contest of who can make her cry… Just stop. Ew”

Many Swifties believe that the tribute was inappropriate, with one saying, This is not even remotely okay, and it’s honestly kind of scary. Poor Taylor. It’s one thing to be a fan, but it’s an entirely different thing to pretend you’re her close, personal friend. She deserves privacy and respect.”

Despite the issue, Taylor Swift’s Nashville shows were all sold out, with several celebrities in the audience.
