Larry Itliong (1913-1977)

An essential figure in union leadership and labor organization, he was influential in forming the United Farm Workers (UFW) in collaboration with Dolores Huerta and Cesar Chavez.

As an outstanding Fil-Am activist, he started the Delano Grape Strike in 1965. The outcome of his movement is improved working conditions and salaries for Filipino and Mexican farm workers in the US.

Dawn Bohulano Mabalon (1972-2018)

A committed educator, historian, and Filipino-Am activist, Mabalon devoted her life to protecting and honoring Filipino American traditions and heritage.

Furthermore, as a co-founder of the Little Manila Foundation in Stockton, California, she has made significant contributions to Filipino American history through several books she wrote highlighting Filipinos’ rich culture.

Alice Peña Bulos (1930 – 2016)

She was Fil-Am activist who dedicated her life to improving the welfare and rights of the Filipino American community.

She advocated for Filipino World War II veterans’ rights and contributed to political empowerment and social justice. Her tireless efforts opened opportunities for Filipino Americans and other minorities to have their voices heard.

Known as the ‘Godmother of Filipino American politics,” a 4-mile long highway in San Francisco Bay Area was named after this late civil rights activist.

Geena Rocero

As a successful model, founder of Gender Proud, and a transgender rights champ, Rocero leverages her reputation as a prominent Filipino-Am activist.

Moreover, she increased awareness of transgender issues and supported policy reforms that advance and protect transgender rights.

Jose Antonio Vargas

As a filmmaker, journalist, and immigration rights defender, Vargas revealed his own undocumented illegality in 2011. He fueled a nationwide debate on immigration.

This remarkable Fil-Am activist also formed Define American, a group dedicated to reforming the outlook of Filipino immigrants in the US.

Kevin Nadal

An esteemed writer, professor, and Fil-Am activist, he is well-known for his studies observing the effect of microaggressions on underrepresented populations of Filipino Americans and the LGBTQ+ community.
