Mira Sorvino Calls Out Oscars for Snubbing Father from In Memoriam Tribute
The Oscars are among the most respected awards in the entertainment industry. The annual “In Memoriam” segment is a poignant reminder of the lost talent over the past year.
However, the controversy when Mira Sorvino called out the Oscars for snubbing her father, Paul Sorvino, in the tribute marred this year’s ceremony.
Paul Sorvino is a veteran actor well-known for his roles in “Goodfellas,” “The Rocketeer,” and “The Gambler.” He passed away on November 2021 at 82.
He had an impressive career and contributions to the film industry. However, his name was noticeably absent from the “In Memoriam” part of the 2023 Oscars.

The star of Shining Vale expressed her disapproval of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. She shared it in an Instagram post on Monday.
She criticized them for not including her deceased father, Paul Sorvino, in the awards show’s “In Memoriam” section.
What Mira Sorvino Had to Say
Mira Sorvino took to social media to express her disappointment, writing, “My heart is broken that my father, the legendary Paul Sorvino, was not included in the In Memoriam segment of the #Oscars2023.
She added, “He gave his heart and soul to his craft and deserved to have an honor alongside his fellow artists.”
“Incredibly hurt and shocking that my father’s lifelong, enormous, irreplaceable contribution to the world of cinema was overlooked by whoever made that list.”
“We, his loving family, and you, his dedicated fans, know just how unique and incredible he was,” Mira wrote.

She captioned a clip from the 1996 Oscars, where she won the award for Best Supporting Actress. “We wish @theacademy does something to put this right.”
Previously, the performer expressed her admiration for the late Paul Sorvino. She stated, “On this Oscars night, I am so happy for all the nominees and winners.
“But I’m also moved in a thousand different ways when I remember the night I got to share my award with my Dad, the great actor Paul Sorvino, who wasn’t nominated ever.”
“To share this very positive moment with my dad. My first and best teacher, my beloved father, who came to all the school plays and loved from the bottom of his heart.”
Mira added, “The brilliant Thespian whom all his colleagues revered as one of the greatest, to get to give back to him what he had been giving me all my life — love and belief and admiration and gratitude.” She added.
Later, she shared a story on Twitter about her father’s omission. “It is baffling beyond belief that my beloved father and many other amazing, brilliant departed actors were left out. The Oscars forgot about Paul Sorvino, but the rest of us never will!”
Reactions from Fans and the Academy
Many fans and colleagues of Paul Sorvino echoed Mira’s sentiments, with some even accusing the Oscars of deliberate snubbing.
Some suggested that Sorvino’s outspoken criticism of the film industry’s treatment of women may have influenced his omission.
In response, the Academy released a statement expressing their condolences to Sorvino’s family.
They also acknowledge that the “In Memoriam” segment is always a complex and emotional process.
They also explained that it’s only sometimes possible to include everyone who has passed away in the industry due to time constraints.
