From ‘Naruto’ to ‘Dragon Ball Z’: How Anime Inspired Michael B. Jordan’s ‘Creed III’

Michael B. Jordan, the star and director of “Creed 3,” shared how he infused the film with anime influences from his childhood.

Jordan, 36, revealed in a recent interview with Polygon the extent to which various anime inspired the upcoming film.

‘Creed 3’ is the third film installment in the ‘Rocky’ spinoff franchise that follows the boxing career of Adonis Creed, the son of Rocky Balboa’s former rival-turned-friend Apollo Creed.

The first two films were directed by Ryan Coogler, with Jordan starring as Adonis. This time, Adonis will face an old childhood friend, Damian “Diamond Dame” Anderson, who mysteriously appears out of the blue.

Jonathan Majors played the role who is well-known as Quantumania in the blockbuster “Ant-Man and the Wasp.”

What to Expect in Creed 3

He further revealed that the Naruto character ‘Pain’ inspired the film’s antagonist. Jordan explained that he was in awe of the character’s complexity and depth and wanted to incorporate similar qualities into the villain of ‘Creed 3.’

In the interview, Jordan explained that he has always been an anime fan and that the genre has considerably influenced his work.

He stated that anime would heavily influence ‘Creed 3,’ explicitly mentioning ‘Naruto’ and ‘Dragon Ball Z.’

According to Jordan, an episode of “Naruto Shippuden” inspired a particular action shot in ‘Creed 3’ featuring two boxers simultaneously jabbing each other with a cross counterblow. It was specifically episode 450.

“The fight between Creed and Damian had to be an even battle, and in an emotionally high place where these two men were both baring their souls to one another.”

“The emotional level they were at, where they were coming at it from, the emotions between those two characters. That was the moment I leaned into that scene from ‘Naruto,'” he explained.

He notably referenced the common theme of heroes that a rival or a friend challenges.

Creed 3 Anime Theme

The “Killmonger” actor said he drew inspiration from various anime relationships, such as Goku and Vegeta from “Dragon Ball Z,” Ed and Alphonse from “Fullmetal Alchemist,” and Bakugo and Midoriya from “My Hero Academia,” while developing the dynamic between Creed and Damian.

“They repackage these feelings and beats and emotions in different ways through different animation styles.”

“I’m watching “Blue Lock” right now — which is dope as f*ck — and that’s all about the ego of these characters, developing their skills, devouring different styles, and defeating others to evolve and evolve grow,” he said.

Jordan explained that anime resonates with him deeply because he admires Goku’s resilience and the Saiyan’s unwavering ability to become stronger after facing death.

“I think that resilience, that never-give-up attitude, is what I connect with, and I dig that. The unassuming nature of Goku, his disarming nature combined with his ability to be ready for whatever happens when his back is against the wall, is inspiring. He always steps up to whatever challenge.”

‘Creed 3’ will mark Jordan’s directorial debut, and the actor expressed his excitement about taking on the project. He revealed that he had been preparing for the role for a while. Jordan was also thrilled to work with a talented cast and crew.

The actor-director emphasized that while ‘Creed 3‘ would be inspired by anime, it would stay true to the franchise’s roots. He noted that the film would focus on Adonis’ journey and his relationship with Rocky Balboa, played by Sylvester Stallone.
