The End of ‘Mindhunter’: David Fincher Confirms Season 3 Won’t Happen

American movie director David Fincher confirmed that “Mindhunter” would not have a third season. Netflix released the thriller series in 2017.

Its second season followed in August 2019. Since then, fans have clamored for a third season of the intriguing TV show.

The series is about two FBI agents, Holden Ford, portrayed by Jonathan Groff, and Bill Tench, played by Holt McCallany.

They work together to launch a project to interview captured serial killers to understand their thoughts. The duo hopes to use this knowledge to solve open cases.

The news of the show’s cancellation was unsurprising after an announcement early in 2020. Netflix said they would put the show on “indefinite hold” with the lead actors. The streaming giant released Groff, McCallany, and Torv from their contracts.

Some interviews and information hinted that the decision to cancel the show was Fincher’s. These cite that he was engaged with other projects or didn’t know what direction to steer the show.

In light of recent information, that is different. Fincher, in an interview, indicated that Netflix decided to cut the show.

In the interview with French outlet Le Journal du Dimanche, the filmmaker stated that the cost of creating the show and the seemingly low number of viewers eventually led to the end of the crime thriller.

Fincher’s insights on Mindhunter season 3 cancellation

“I’m proud of the first two seasons. But it’s a costly show and, for Netflix, we didn’t attract enough audience to justify such an investment [for Season 3],” Fincher explained to the French outlet.

In a previous interview with Vulture, he called the production “grueling and time-consuming” and added that the show was “probably” done. “When I got done [with season two], I was pretty exhausted, and I said, I do not know if I have it in me now to break season 3,” he added.

Even though Netflix canceled Mindhunter, Fincher insists he is not bitter about the development.

“I don’t blame them. They took risks to get the show running, gave me the means to do Mank how I wanted and allowed me to explore new paths with The Killer,” he explained.

Fincher continued, “It’s a blessing to work with people capable of boldness. The day our desires are different, we have to be honest about parting ways.”

He has had a lasting partnership with Netflix, beginning with one of his works, House of Cards, then subsequent productions like Mank and The Killer, which is currently in production.

Mindhunter was a true-crime classic, and it took a historical approach to serial killer profiling rather than focusing on just one story or glamorizing serial killers.

The show looked to analyze them clinically. Mindhunter was a great show, and the news of its cancellation is a bitter pill to swallow.
