Hawaii firefighter sucked into storm drain still fighting for his life
A firefighter in Maui, Hawaii, is still sedated and in critical condition after he was sucked into a storm drain and swept out to the ocean during a flood response in heavy rains Friday, last week.
Tre Evans-Dumaran, 24, was with a crew responding to a flooded home in Kihei when he was sucked into a 4-foot-wide storm drain and swept some 800 yards to where the drain empties into the ocean, according to KITV News.
Evans-Dumaran, who has been with the fire department for three years, was recovered in the ocean by his crew, which started resuscitation until he regained his pulse. He was then brought to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.
Evans-Dumaran is still on life support systems and remains sedated. Doctors are trying to help his lungs recover, which were filled with water
Since then a GoFundMe account has been set up, and within the first 16 hours, had raised nearly $23,000.
