Ex-U.S. Marine admits to $119K fraud in fake claim of relief work in PH

A U.S. Marine Corps veteran from New Jersey, who claimed that he suffered PTSD from having to recover human remains following natural disasters in the Philippines and Thailand, admitted defrauding the Veterans Administration out of $118,979 and threatening to harm a federal agent.

Kamil Wakulik, 38, who was in the Marine Corps from 2003 to 2007, wasn’t involved in such operations, the U.S. Attorney said.

Based on his claim, the federal Department of Veterans Affairs “increased Wakulik’s disability rating and provided additional monthly disability benefit payments totaling over $118,000,” the U.S. Attorney said.

Wakulik pleaded guilty, Jan. 10, to theft of government funds and interstate transmission of a threat of injury. He is scheduled sentencing on June 6.
