Elon Musk converted some offices at Twitter HQ into bedrooms

/ 09:43 AM December 07, 2022

With Elon Musk’s new “extremely hardcore” goals for Twitter comes a significant change in the Twitter HQ. He outfitted some of the offices as bedrooms at the San Francisco office.

Last month, the Twitter CEO gave the remaining employees a memo about “Twitter 2.0.”He gave them two choices: leave or stay in the new working condition of hustling intensely under the new work system. Since he became the platform’s CEO, he had already laid off almost half of the employees, while the others decided to resign.

On Monday, simple bedrooms welcomed the Twitter employees returning to the office. It has dull curtains and a huge conference-room type of monitors. With the current setup, the changes were already an improvement from the initial Therm-a-Rest sleeping bag condition. One Twitter employee shared their sleeping quarters back in November. In addition, there’s even a plant in the room now.

A source shared to Forbes a photo of the converted room. It has a bright orange carpet, a queen bed, and a wooden side table. Alongside the bed, set-up is a table lamp and two office chairs. The source also said that Musk didn’t announce anything about the changes. Most employees thought the beds were intended for the remaining “hardcore” employees so they could stay overnight.

The employee said, “It’s not a good look,” they said. “It’s yet another unspoken sign of disrespect. There is no discussion. Just like, beds showed up.” Moreover, it’s uncertain how many sleeping pods the billionaire CEO has set up. But the source assumes there may be “four to eight per floor.” In addition, the source said that the beds “look comfortable.”

Moreover, another source shared that most converted bedrooms were on a vast, empty floor. They also said there was already trash in one of the trash cans in the room. It appears to them that somebody had stayed there already. The source added, “People are already putting in late nights, so it makes sense to an extent.”

Forbes assured the anonymity of the sources to assure the prevention of the employees’ reprisal. In addition, Zoë Schiffer of Platformer tweeted that a Twitter employee shared that Twitter had converted their office library into a sleeping area. They even described them as “cozy.”

In November, one employee also shared a photo of Esther Crawford, the director of product management, on Twitter. He was sleeping on the floor. Elon Musk had been vocal about how he slept on couches of Tesla factories. He had also slept under his desk, so he was visible to his team during shift changes.

Also, in the same month, Musk tweeted that he would be sleeping and working at their corporate offices along Market Street “until the org is fixed.” In 2018, he also once tweeted about “sleeping at factory.” Musk is referring to the Tesla factory in California.
