Three Fil-Canadians win in Winnipeg school trustee elections

Three Filipino Canadian candidates swept Winnipeg’s school trustee elections in the Oct. 26 municipal elections.

Dante Aviso (Ward 5), Perla Javate (Ward 6) and Ann Evangelista (Ward 9) will now have seats on the board that plays a key role in education.

Elected for a four-year term, school trustees set policies regarding the provision of educational services in Winnipeg.

Aviso is a realtor and active community volunteer. He chairs the North Valour Residents Association, Inc., is a board member of LiteracyWorks, a Volunteer Teacher’s Assistant – Winnipeg School Division 1, and board member and treasurer of the Philippine Canadian Centre of Manitoba Inc.

Evangelista has more than 25 years of experience in the education sector both in Canada and overseas, is currently an instructor at the University of Winnipeg, holds a degree in Education, BA (Honors) in psychology, a master’s degree in Education, and serves on the Board of MAFTI (Manitoba Association of Filipino Teachers)

Javate has been a Community Liaison Officer/Intercultural Support Worker with the Winnipeg School Division During for 34 years and is president of the Philippine Heritage Council of Manitoba Inc.
