Ilocano language, culture course offered in SF Manilatown Center

A year-long “Kommunity Kultura” intensive on Ilokano culture and language will be taught at the International Hotel Manilatown Center in-person starting Saturday, Nov. 5, at 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

The year-long recurring in-person class will take place once a week at the Center on Saturdays. There will be holiday breaks throughout the year and there is room for flexible scheduling. to learn about Ilokano language, culture and ancestry!

Jeffrey Miguel Acido, PhD., will teach the course, whose aim is to “Reclaim and reawaken the nakem (soul-consciousness); learn basic and conversational Ilokano; learn philosophies rooted in Ilokano culture; explore Philippine and Filipino American history; assist in developing an Ilokano online curriculum.”

Sessions will share stories, food, experiences and longings of what it means to be Ilokano in the diaspora.

The fee is $150, which will cover the whole year of programming. The class will be limited to 25 students; so participants are encouraged to register for this class only if they are available for a full year of programming.

A non-refundable $20 deposit will be required to hold a student’s place in the class with the remaining $130 due in full on the first day of class on Saturday, November 5th.

Born in the Ilocos and raised in Manila and Hawaii, Jeff Acido received his PhD in Educational Foundation and was a Lecturer and Adjunct Professor in the Indo-Pacific Languages and Literature, Ilokano Program at the University of Hawaii Manoa from 2010-2015.
