Filipino store clerk in LA dies in attack by teenage shoplifters
A 69-year-old Filipino liquor store worker in Highland Park, Los Angeles died after he was hit in the head with a scooter when he tried to stop a group of shoplifters on Thursday, Oct. 6.
Steven Reyes, a worker at Tony’s Market on Figueroa Street and E. Avenue 40, tried to stop four teenagers from stealing a case of beer.
When he tried to stop the group, one of the suspects and struck him in the head with a scooter, according to the Angeles Police.
Reyes was taken to a hospital where he later died. The suspect is still at large.
Nelle Reyes, the victim’s daughter, told ABC7 News that her father came to the U.S. from the Philippines for a better life. She said he was a hard worker and always wanted to do the right thing.
