Doctors are trying to save the lives of a Filipina, who is 22 weeks pregnant, and her would-be infant boy, after she suddenly went into a coma with a brain hemorrhage while on a Memorial Day weekend vacation with her husband.

Pia Reyes, 42, suddenly fell ill while she and her husband, Daniel White, a 42-year-old financial analyst for Fairfax County, Virginia, were visiting his family on Hatteras Island, North Carolina. Reyes is an analyst for International Finance Corporation of the World Bank.

The couple met on Match.com eight years ago and have shared a happy life of golf, concerts and cooking while deciding to have a baby, according to a PEOPLE magazine exclusive feature on their current challenge. Their baby boy, whom they pre-named Noah, is expected Oct. 17.

A CAT-scan showed traumatic injuries to her brain, with a blood clot putting pressure on her brain stem, which triggered the coma. Even if Reyes survives, her quality of life may be compromised.

Reyes is stable but the blood clot’s location is preventing surgery. Doctors told White their baby has to make it to 23 or 24 weeks in order to be safely delivered.

The couple’s family and friends have a daily prayer on Zoom every night, with everyone hoping for a miracle.

“My wife’s originally from the Philippines. We’ve had people fly in from all over the world to see her. The outpouring of support has been enormous and it means so much and it makes it so much easier,” White told PEOPLE.
