Filipina in New Jersey stabbed to death by estranged husband

A Filipina in Lodi, New Jersey, a victim of repeated domestic abuse, was stabbed to death by her estranged and abusive husband on Thursday, May 26.

Janet Cinco, 44, had suffered repeated assaults at the hands of Joel Cinco, 48, a Filipino national, before he killed her in the 200 block of Westervelt Place where neighbors said the Cincos lived in an upstairs apartment of a house with their children.

Civilians restrained Joel Cinco, 48, until police came to arrest him. Officers who were first on the scene conducted CPR before paramedics took over and brought Janet Cinco to Hackensack University Medical Center, where she died in the operating room, sources said.

Joel Cinco was charged with murder, burglary and weapons offenses and taken into custody at the Bergen County jail ahead of a first appearance in court.

He has a criminal record of repeated domestic violence offenses including stalking, harassment, making terroristic threats and repeatedly violating restraining orders, as well as resisting arrest.

In December 2020, Carlstast police arrested and charged him with terroristic threats, criminal restraint, harassment and weapons offenses. He was put on probation.

Homicide detectives with Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella’s Major Crime Unit are investigating with Lodi police, assisted by the Bergen County Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Identification, which collected evidence, and the county Medical Examiner’s Office.
