Acclaimed pianist Sunico holds masterclass with young artists

NEW YORK – Acclaimed Filipino pianist Raul Sunico delighted New York audiences with a well-received recital at the prestigious Merkin Concert Hall in Manhattan on October 21.

Sunico’s acclaimed performance skills were on full display for a recital of works by Chopin, De Leon, Piazolla, Rachmaninoff, Liszt, and Ravel, among others. Maestro Sunico was congratulated by a throng of admirers from the Filipino American community and mainstream music audiences at post-recital reception at Merkin Hall.

A few days earlier on October 19, Sunico shared his talent, skill, and expertise with young musicians at a Masterclass on Piano Performance held at the Kalayaan Hall of the Philippine Center in New York.

The event organized by the Philippine Consulate General in cooperation with JS Productions and the Felipe De Leon, Jr. Foundation was held as part of the commemorative activities for Filipino American History Month.

Consul General Theresa Dizon-De Vega dubbed it a unique opportunity for a renowned Filipino musician to interact with emerging performers in the US.

Young Filipino American pianist Rheal Darlyn Balajadia, who participated in a Masterclass for the first time, said that the advice given by Sunico will serve as an inspiration for further hone her skills in piano performance.

Sunico not only provided helpful tips to the young performers, but also took to the keys to demonstrate ways to improve their piano playing. He likewise educated the audience by providing information on different musical styles and background inputs on the composers and the chosen pieces.
