A 21-year-old man from Memphis, Tennessee was arrested after stealing a car from his date. But as if to add insult to injury, he also used the vehicle to take the woman’s godsister to the movies.

Police caught Kelson Griffin on Sunday, July 15, at a drive-in theater where his date took place, FOX 13 reported.

It all started when Griffin first showed up to his date’s home on Saturday night, July 14. His date, Faith Pugh, recalled that when he arrived, he did not bring his own car.

Pugh said she had known Griffin way back in high school. She shared that the suspect just texted him one day asking her to have dinner together. “He just out of the blue texted me and asked me to go out,” Pugh told WREG.

The two went to their date using Pugh’s car, but things took a curious turn when Griffin asked his date to take the driver’s seat because he couldn’t decide where to take her.

Both then stopped at a gas station, and Griffin asked his date to buy him a cigar. When she went outside, Griffin drove off with her car.

The weirdness did not stop there. As Pugh was picked up by her mom, she received a text message from her godsister and told her that Griffin asked her out.

She and the godsister then devised a plan. Pugh tracked the vehicle via the GPS from her godsister’s phone, where it showed that the two were headed to the drive-in.

“He let her drive, so she drove him to the drive-in. He didn’t even have any money. She actually paid their way to get in the drive-in just so I could get my car back,” Pugh was quoted in the WREG report.

Authorities then arrested Griffin on the scene, charging him with theft of property. The suspect apparently had a previous record, when he was first arrested in 2016, after he and two others robbed a restaurant.

Pugh had this message to her date after the experience: “I hope he’s in jail for a long time. I never want to speak to him ever again.” Katrina Hallare/JB
