Utah lawyers receive topless photo in email; state bar apologizes for mistake

/ 03:53 PM March 07, 2018

One can just imagine the shock of lawyers across the state of Utah when they recently received something out of the ordinary in their emails.

It all started when the Utah State Bar sent an e-mail blast to law practitioners. The email was supposed to be an advertisement for the bar’s annual spring convention, but a photo of a woman’s exposed breasts was included, Fox 13 Salt Lake City reported on Monday.

Journalist Ben Winslow shared on Twitter the content of the e-mail which the bar sent out.

Upon the circulation of the message, netizens could not help but laugh at the blunder. One even cautioned the lawyers not to open the message while in the office, because it is “NSFW” (not safe for work).

Netizen @hobocita wondered if someone from the bar “had a bad case of the Mondays,” prompting him or her to blast the message.

Policy and advocacy counsel at Alliance for a Better Utah, Chase Thomas, was one of the lawyers who got the message. He warned the public and wondered if the state bar’s account got hacked.

“I was expecting a routine email I would most likely scroll through and delete. But I had to scroll through and delete a lot faster than I had initially anticipated,” Thomas told local media The Deseret News.

His intern, who was sitting next to him when he opened the email in the middle of the House gallery, also “laughed so hard.”

Because of the incident, the state bar issued an apology. It also assured that an investigation is underway.

“We are aware of it and we are horrified,” Utah State Bar communications director Matt Page told The Deseret News. “Our goal is to get to the bottom of what happened and ensure that it never happens again.”

The state is also looking into the matter whether or not someone had accidentally or intentionally included the photo in the e-mail.

“We are looking into both of those scenarios,” Page added. “At this point, we’re not sure which one of those occurred.” Katrina Hallare/JB
